If you like dogs and enjoy a little exercise, this is a fun job! The work you do really helps get them adopted. All of the dogs at the shelter get walked twice a day, every day, 365 days a year. It takes a whole crew of people to accomplish this and we are always looking for more walkers. Join us!
Are you a fan of feline's? Our shelter cats are always looking for more human assistants to help attend to all of their needs. The shelter cares for between 50-100 cats a day, all year long. Figure in kitten season each year and those numbers increase! It's enough to make even "a crazy cat lady" run for the hills!
Fostering a dog or a cat is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have (other than adopting, of course!). When you foster, you agree to take a homeless pet into your home and give him or her love, care, and attention, which ultimately helps us find them a perfect home. The shelter provides their food and any needed medications.
Are you a "people person"? Do you have light office skills that could be put to good use, like answering phones and greeting the public? We have two offices (dog facility and cat facility) that both need the support of volunteers every single day.
The mission of Sammie's Friends is to raise funds to provide medical care for our shelter animals. This means that we make many vet appointments throughout the week. We are always looking for more volunteers to help transport our animals to and/or from their appointments.
SAMMIE'S NIFTY THRIFT SHOP
Sammie's Nifty Thrift Shop raises huge funds for our shelter animals and other disadvantaged animals in Nevada County. We are always looking for volunteers to help sort and price clothing, stock racks and shelves, receive and sort donated items, and more! If you love the retail environment and love to help animals... join our Nifty Team!
WHAT VOLUNTEERS SAY
I have been volunteering at Sammie’s Friends for 10 years. It has been the most rewarding volunteer experience I have ever had. You know, no matter how small your contribution – be it cleaning cages, fostering, spending time with a particular frightened animal - you have made a difference in that animal’s life, and it WILL find its forever home because of Sammie’s Friends dedication. It’s a “win-win” for you AND the animal.
I love making a little difference in the happiness of each dog and seeing their lives change for the better. I also love the teamwork of the staff and volunteers who are so committed to the cause.

“ I love volunteering at Sammie’s Friends, because animals especially dogs, have been a blessing to me throughout my life. This is my opportunity to give back to them, and be a part of our wonderful community.”
