AT THE SHELTER
This job is all about figuring out what makes a cat happy. And face it, cats are not as demonstrative as dogs. But there are times - when the cats lay their heads softly against your cheek, closes its eyes and begins to purr in your ear - that is all the reward you need!
This is what it takes:
Approximately two hours for a shift- one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning shift is when the heavy work is done. The cat kennels, community rooms and litter boxes are all cleaned and then all the cats get a tasty meal. In the afternoon, the cuddling begins full force- holding, petting, brushing and playing! The afternoon crew also helps potential adopters meet and handle the cats.
This is what it accomplishes:
Handling the cats helps to socialize them. It keeps them calmer in a stressful environment, which makes them more adoptable. We show potential adopters how each cat likes to be cuddled. We also help with disease control (a very important role) by keeping the kennels and rooms clean and reporting issues to the shelter staff.

This is what it takes:
Approximately two hours for a shift- one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Teams of 3-5 walkers work each shift. We have a nice trail system blazed around the shelter. Each dog gets some fresh air, spends quality time with a human and perhaps learns some manners. We also have a new play yard for some off leash fun in the afternoons!
This is what it accomplishes:
Many things! By getting out of their kennels, the dogs suffer less from boredom and depression. They stay socialized and happy for human attention. We give potential adopters information about the dogs’ behavior. We watch for signs of medical or social problems and alert the shelter staff. And we all get a little exercise!
If you like dogs and enjoy a little exercise, this is really a fun job! You will meet lots of nice dogs and people too. Sometimes it’s a little taxing, but it’s very satisfying because the dogs show their appreciation. The best part is seeing a dog friend driving away with their new family! The work you do really helps get them adopted.
All of the dogs at the shelter get walked twice a day, every day, 365 days a year. It takes a whole crew of people to accomplish this and we are always looking for more walkers. Join us!

Sammie's Friends mission is to raise funds to provide medical care for our shelter animals. This means that we make many Vet appointments throughout the week. We are looking for more volunteers to help transport our animals to and from their appointments. We typically can give you between 3-5 days notice, but sometimes need assistance at the last minute depending on the needs of the animal.
Animal Transporter Details:
You would pick up an animal from the shelter in the morning, drive them to their appointment, and then later in the day pick them up and bring them back to the shelter. We typically schedule our appointments 3-5 days in advance and try to give you as much notice as possible, but sometimes need assistance at the last minute depending on the needs of the animal.
If you are retired or have a flexible schedule, and have a reliable car, please call the shelter and speak with Phil about signing up to join this very important volunteer team! (530) 471-5041

Dog Kennel Assistants work every morning, 7 days a week, to assist our kennel staff with washing dishes, doing laundry, and filling water bowls. This is a huge help to the staff who spends their mornings cleaning kennels, giving out medications, and feeding the dogs. Dog Kennel Assistants work only the morning shift from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Sammie's Emergency Evacuation Team
Sammie's Friends is organizing an Emergency Evacuation Team. The purpose of this team is to help transport our shelter animals to a safe place should we ever need to evacuate. Having this special group of volunteers will allow us to further organize care for our animals at the temporary emergency location. We will need people with trucks, trailers, and larger vehicles that can hold multiple crates and travel kennels. We need to always be ready to transport dogs, cats and possibly livestock.
