Help For Your Pet

Community Program

Sammie's Community Program

unnamed.jpg

Sammie's Friends has a program to help Nevada County pets in need.  We wish we could help the whole world but unfortunately we do not have the resources to do that.  Sammie's Friends was originally founded to pay for the medical care of the Nevada County Animal Shelter animals, which we have done for the past 10 years. Since 2010, we have operated the county animal shelter.

As a result of a phone call we received many years ago from a woman, we developed a program to help animals in need in our community who live with their guardians.  The call went like this...

"I am 80 years old.  I have a 15 year old cat who is my last friend on this earth and he's sick.   I receive $800/month from Social Security and don't have the money to take him to a veterinarian.  Can you help me?"

That was a heartbreaking call and we decided to expand our program to include community animals in need.  Each year we help approximately 800 animals in our community to receive veterinary care. We are privately funded by grant writing and wonderful people who choose to donate to this cause so that the animals in our community are not left to suffer or be euthanized because their owners do not have the necessary resources to help them.

This program is for those who have tried getting help from their family and friends, and anywhere else they can and are unable to come up with the needed funds to help their pet.  Often many people come up with creative ideas to pay their vet bills such as selling on ebay or Craigslist.

In order to help your pet Sammie's Friends has allotted funds to local veterinarians to be used at their discretion to help pets in need.   If you need help for your pet call one of these veterinarians and let them know what is wrong with your pet and that you also need some financial help to pay the bill.

Moving Rehoming Tips

Moving and Rehoming Tips

It is your responsibility to find a new home for your pet. All options should be exhausted before taking your pet to the local animal shelter. The Nevada County Animal Shelter is intended for stray pets, and was not designed as an adoption center for pets with homes. As such, it should be considered the last resort, rather than the first. Following are suggestions for finding a home for your pet.

1.  Ask friends, family, coworkers and neighbors about adopting your pet.

2.  Online Breed Rescues

If your pet is purebred, check with breed rescues online about doing a courtesy listing for you.

3.  Online Advertising

List your pet on Petfinder.com and Craigslist.com

4.  Other Local Rescue Groups

Call other local rescue groups about their adoptathons, and ask if you can participate with your pet.   For Pet’s Sake: 263-3331, Scooter’s Pals: 350-2099

5.  KNCO

Call KNCO Swap Shop, 530-477-KNCO, and talk about your pet. Share the fun stories, and the sad story about why you can’t keep your pet.

6.  Put an ad in Union newspaper and the Grass Valley Trader

The Union (530) 273-9567.  Grass Valley Trader (530) 272-4919.

7.  Check the shelters ‘Want’ list

Talk to the staff and ask them to check our Want List for people looking to adopt certain breeds of animals.

8.  Place your pet on the Owner Turn-In list at the Shelter

If we have space to take in your pet, we will call you.  If we call and receive no answer from you within 24 hours, we will remove your name from the list.

9.  Create a flyer for your pet

Create a flyer of your spayed/neutered pet with good photos and lots of information about his/her personality, be sure to include your name and contact number on the flyer, Post your flyer all around town at pet stores and feed stores, and  other places that allow flyers, such as thrift stores, vet clinics, etc.

10.  Courtesy Listings

Sammie's Friends can also do a courtesy listing on our Facebook page and on our website.   Make a flyer of your pet (include multiple photos and a detailed description of your pets personality and ideal home). Send your JPG flyers and any additional info to Evan@sammiesfriends.org
