   Bandit the Boxer

Last August, this poor little guy, Bandit, came to the Nevada County Animal Shelter in a horribly emaciated state.  He ended up having surgery to remove a large tumor that was blocking the entrance to his intestines.  It turns out the tumor was caused by an ulcer, which in turn was probably caused by something he ate.  With the tumor removed, Bandit began to gain weight, and was expected to recover fully and to have a healthy life.

In September, Bandit went to live in his forever home in Half Moon Bay.  Here is what his new family had to say about Bandit a month later, along with a picture of Bandit and his new friend, Cameo::

"He weighs about 42 pounds now.  The weight gain is slowing now.  He's eating 3 times a day now.  I don't think he needs to gain weight fast now.  You can still see his ribs, but not like before.  The area on his back between his hips and chest has doubled.

"He's gaining a lot of strength, too.  He pulls a lot on his walks and is afraid of NOTHING.  He unfortunately pulls towards people, dogs, cars, and the garbage truck.  So he needs to be watched carefully, and I'll start working with him on the 'leave it' command.  He's also becoming strong due to playing with Cameo.  He got a really good run in the field on Sunday.  You would not believe how fast he can run.  He was 'chase me if you can.'"

In November, 2009, these photos of Bandit were sent by his new family, who said:

"Here are a few photos from November 1, 2009.  These photos were taken in a San Gregorio field where Bandit likes to stretch his legs.  He is quite the runner and his weight is up to 45 lbs.  Still, in some angles and poses you can see some ribs in the photos, but mostly he looks lean and in good shape.  He is quite the walker and loves to play with whoever has the energy.  Bandit loves the San Mateo and Half Moon Bay dog parks where he can meet new friends and play."

Bandit's amazing story is just one example of what can happen when people donate.  Without the support of Sammie's Friends and all the generous folks who donated to help Bandit and the other animals of Nevada County, Bandit would not be the healthy, happy dog he is today.  Thanks to your donations, Bandit now has a wonderful new life.
