Scheil was suffering from heartworms.   Sammie's Friends helped pay for the treatment so that Scheil can have a good life.   Heartworms are a horrible parasite that is given to the dog by an infected mosquito. The worms will eventually kill the dog if the dog is not treated.   The best remedy is to keep your dog on heartworm prevention at all times.
Lili is a cat who had stomatitis.  This is an inflammation of the mouth, and is very painful.  An immune-related cause is suspected.  Many cats affected by this will be unable to eat, develop weight loss, and have excess salivation.  Oral examination often reveals a cobblestone-like redness in the throat areas and severe inflammation where the tooth and gums meet.  Often the only solution is removing the teeth.

Honey had mange very badly, had a collar embedded in her neck, had a yeast infection, and was heartworm-positive.   She was stuck in a shelter for 3 months, and of course no one would adopt her in this condition. Several rescues banded together to help poor Honey.  She is now safe and receiving treatment for her many maladies.   How on earth can people let their animals get in this condition?
Scrap was a 11-year-old 103-pound lab/pit bull mix. He had a very large tumor which was removed. Sadly, he had a cancer that he did not recover from, and ultimately was euthanized.  His owners tried hard to save him.  Please say a prayer for Scrap.
This beautiful dog was shot in the leg by someone.  Buddy was picked up as a stray and taken to Animal Control.  He has had surgery on his leg and will be better soon.  He will become adoptable and make someone a wonderful pet.
Jody is a great dog who had kennel cough and also had to be treated for heartworm.   She received treatment and then went home to stay with a volunteer while she recuperated.   Jody has been adopted and has a wonderful Rhodesian Ridgeback that she lives with along with her humans.   Jody is one of the coolest dogs we've ever had at the shelter. She gets along fabulously with everyone.  Jody is a pit mix and she speaks well for the breed - an outstanding role model.
Oliver was a precious kitty who was hit by a car.  At first it was hoped that his mangled leg could be amputated and he would be fine.  However, it turned out that Oliver had many internal injuries to the degree that he could not be saved.  Oliver passed over the Rainbow Bridge, making us all very sad.
Maddy is a kitty who had a nasty abscess on her side.   The abscess was cleaned up and Maddy was put on antibiotics and is doing fine.
Lucky is an old blind kitty who came to the shelter and was eventually adopted by a dear woman who will let him live out his years with her and her family.  Lucky's kidneys were degenerating and he also had some anemia.  He is taking medication to help those two conditions.  Last I heard he was a happy kitty in his new home.
Meako is a four-year-old Shepherd mix who had been hit by a car and not seen a vet.   He had a diaphragmatic hernia that needed repair, and when Dr. Trapani opened him up, many of his organs were out of place from the trauma of the car hitting him.   He had not been eating and had lost a lot of weight.  Meako was an unusual and challenging case, but ultimately was fine, thanks to Dr. Trapani and his talent as a veterinarian.

Chrissy had an ulcer on her eye which needed to be treated by a kitty ophthalmologist.  She recovered and is doing fine.  Chrissy went to AnimalSave, and Sammie's Friends paid for shots and feline leukemia and FIV tests to make sure she was disease free.

Chrissy is in a foster home and learning to be a cat.   Chrissy had been traumatized by something and needed special love and care.

Snowflake is an old kitty who has diabetes.  She is in an ongoing foster home.  Sammie's Friends will pay for her insulin and a special formula until her time is up.

Update

Snowflake continues to take her WSN® PetRemedy™ Glucose Support Formula -- from www.petremedy.com.  Snowflake has been taking this supplement along with a very small amount of insulin for a couple of years.  As of the last couple of months, she no longer needs insulin.

Tux is an older kitty who arrived on someone's doorstep.  She is a cutie and a nice kitty.  Sammie's Friends was able to help with her medical care.  She needed dental care as most older kitties do.  She had her teeth cleaned and scaled and a couple of extractions.
Buttercup is a precious kitty who was born with a malformed spine and hind legs.   She drags her bottom along on the ground, and also because of the malformation cannot totally empty her bladder without assistance.   She continuously had bladder infections.   Sammie's Friends helps with the regular testing of her urine and the ongoing medication that she needs.  Buttercup is a very special kitty.

Curt, of Sammie's Friends, built a special litter box for Buttercup so that she can raise up her back end and not drag herself through the urine and feces causing further urinary infections. Here, Buttercup inspects her new litter box.

Susan the cat only has one tooth, but eats up a storm.  She was diagnosed with diabetes and treated with insulin.  She was adopted by a wonderful couple who help many kitties and doggies.  Susan's dad told me that with some different food and insulin for a little while, Susan is no longer diabetic.  Susan was a shelter favorite.
Telly had to have hip and knee x-rays and updates on his shots to prepare to go to Search and Rescue.  He went to Search and Rescue but did not make it all the way through.  He was too undependable.  Sammie's Friends also paid to have a dewclaw removed that he had ripped loose.  Telly ultimately went to the K-9 Communications Center in Los Angeles to become a better member of society.
Doozle is a young Jack Russell who was run over by a car and had a broken femur.  The poor little guy was in a lot of pain.  He also was neutered while his femur was being repaired.  Doozle recovered well.
Foster was a beautiful orange kitty who was found lying by the side of the road.  After 2 days of lying there, a person finally called Animal Control to pick him up.  He had an injured back from being hit by a car.  He seemed to be regaining some movement with the use of steroids.  Then an enormous inoperable tumor was found in his chest.  Very sad - in the end poor Foster had to be euthanized.
Cheney was a 7-year-old Norwegian Elkhound who had dental problems and needed a cleaning and some extractions.  He also had been hurt by the neighbor's dog and had a laceration which needed to be repaired.
Bosso is a pit bull who was tied on a chain and attacked by another dog.  Even though he weighs 80 pounds, being tied up he couldn't defend himself adequately.  He had punctures and lacerations which were cared for and eventually he was O.K.

With the enactment of Health & Safety Code 122335 it is unlawful to tether, fasten, chain, tie up a dog for more than 3 hours in a 24-hour period of time.  Tying or chaining is a sure way to turn a good dog into a problem dog.  We beg you please don't do it.
