   Animals Helped by Sammie's Friends
in 2007 (Page 1)

Abby came to our shelter with mange and edema and skin infections and needed to be spayed. She was a total mess. She couldn't even be spayed until her general health improved. We treated her many conditions and then a wonderful couple took her home to foster her until she got well and could be spayed and eventually she was adopted by them. Yeah!
Jack is a kitty who had bladder stones and could not urinate.   He was treated and appears to be recovering.

This is Bella, who came to the shelter in October 2006.  She was in terrible shape with a serious case of demodectic mange, was severely undernourished and totally neglected.  Sammie's Friends stepped in to give this girl some help.  She looked so forlorn and depressed.

Wow, this is Bella today (April 2007)!  It's hard to tell that she is the same girl.  After she was treated by Sammie's Friends, she recovered and was adopted by a great person who has taken excellent care of her.  She is beautiful!  Look at her eyes and ears and compare them to the "before" picture.  She is alert and interested.  It's cases like this that makes it so worthwhile to be doing what Sammie's Friends does.  Thank you to all who have contributed.  This success story belongs to YOU!

Dot is a dog that had been shot in both hind legs and both legs were broken.  Sammie's Friends helped cover the cost of Dot's expensive surgery.
Gator had an enzyme missing from his pancreas which means he was not digesting and absorbing his food.   He was getting very skinny until we had him diagnosed.   He will now be on an enzyme for the rest of his life.  (This is not very expensive and easily mixed in with his food.)  Gator now lives with a pharmacist and his wife.   Very good pick on his part, given his condition.
Kovoo is a dog that wandered onto a man's property.  The man wanted to save him but Kovoo had heartworm.  The person who found him lives on disability and doesn't have much money.  Sammie's Friends believed if the man was willing to give Kovoo a home then we could help pay for the heartworm treatment.
Big Boy was found by someone and brought to the shelter.  He had puncture wounds in his back and had been attacked by something.  He was in the hospital for about a week being treated and seeing if he would be able to walk again.  He is a dear cat and recovered well and has been adopted.

Here's Jessie as a pup. As a 2-year-old dog, Jessie had a large mass cell mammary gland tumor removed.  If a female dog is spayed before her first heat, she will never get this kind of tumor.  With each successive heat the likelihood of the tumors increases.  Jessie is now spayed.  We wish Jessie well and pray for a good and quick recovery.

Krissy is a little dog who had been having seizures.   She was checked out by a vet and given some medication to control the seizures, and appears to be doing better.
Rusty was rescued by Nevada County Animal Control after a sanctuary closed and he had nowhere to go.   Rusty had very bad teeth.   After a dental appointment  where his teeth were cleaned up and his gums repaired, he was good to go.

Cricket is a Jack Russell who was savagely attacked because she was whining.  She was attacked with a four-pronged hoe which went through her back and damaged a vertebra.  She had a portion of the vertebral lamina removed. She was in intensive care for five days.  Her prognosis is guarded but good.  She is now able to eat and go to the bathroom on her own, and is beginning to get movement in her hindquarters.  We pray for a full recovery.  The perpetrator will be prosecuted.  Cricket now belongs to Nevada County Animal Control.

Here is Cricket now.  She is in a foster home and is getting great care.  While she still has trouble walking because her hind legs do not have full recovery from the nerve damage she suffered, she is getting better.  It's nice to see how much better she looks now.  She is a real cutie.

Here is what Cleo's person said about Cleo.  She is an older cat (around 15 - no one knows for sure).  The vet was wonderful with her and did a full check-up and blood draw.  He thought she might have kidney disease.  Her kidney count was high, but within the normal range.  Her liver count was high.  We are going to buy her cat food from the vet's, and they think that will help bring those higher numbers from her blood draw down.

Thanks to Sammie's Friends for helping with Cleo. I'm so happy that she isn't sick.

Little seven-pound chihuahua, Flower, had hernia surgery on her abdomen. She is doing just fine.
Kelsey is a 10-year-old Cocker Spaniel who had a very large mammary tumor removed. The tumor was so big she could hardly walk.  She is a very sweet little girl and deserved the help.
Reggie is a 100-pound Rottweiler who was going to be euthanized because he had been hit by a car and his left hind leg was destroyed.   Unfortunately, the leg could not be saved, but Reggie could.  His leg was amputated and Reggie is now doing just great.  He is also being taught manners in his foster home and will be a great dog for someone
PS is a leukemia-positive kitty who lives with the same wonderful person who has Madaline and Jessica.  Sammie's Friends pays for ongoing medical care for PS.
Jessica is a leukemia-positive kitty from the Nevada County Animal Shelter who was lucky enough to find a home with a wonderful lady who has other positive kitties.   Sammie's Friends pays for health check-ups.
Madaline is a Manx kitty who came to the shelter a couple of years ago.  The lack of a tail can indicate underdeveloped spinal-cord nerves, which can lead to paralysis and other health problems such as being unable to eliminate on their own.   Madaline has to have her bowels and bladder eliminated several times a day by her guardian. Was she ever a lucky cat to find a home with the same wonderful person who has Jessica.
This precious doggie has Addison's disease, which is adrenal gland insufficiency.  This is a treatable disease with a monthly injection.  Poor Rossee (pronounced Rosy)  needs a home as the people who own her cannot keep her.
