   Animals Helped by Sammie's Friends
in 2006 (Page 2)

During 2006, 196 animals were helped by Sammie's Friends
at a cost of over $61,000.

Alex is a kitty someone found under the deck of their house with its neck nearly cut off.  She has a band about an inch wide all the way around her neck that was like ground-up meat and bright red and bloody.  We were able to clear that up.

Next, Alex developed another problem: She was diagnosed with spleen cancer.  When she was actually operated on she did not have a tumor at all; she had a mummified fetus in her abdominal cavity.  Alex is doing fine now and is ready to be adopted.

Marvin, a little chihuahua, has a cherry eye or prolapsed gland of the third eyelid.  This "cherry" bothers the dog and covers part of the eye so it may interfere with vision.  It is cosmetically quite unattractive.  Marvin had his surgery and came though it just fine.

Deborah is a little kitty with numerous problems starting out from a bad beginning without proper nutrition, mostly eating dog food.  (Did you know that a dog-food diet for cats can eventually lead to blindness and heart disease?  Taurine is an essential ingredient that cats need that is not in dog food.)

Deborah has an upper respiratory condition and some kind of neurological and vision imbalance (probably from improper diet).  She is being treated and will make somebody a nice little kitty.

Sweetie was brought to the shelter with a horrible front leg fracture.  The leg was badly broken, so a volunteer immediately called the great people at For the Love of Pets Veterinary Hospital and she was rushed there.  The x-ray proved what the people who found her had said was a break that was almost a week old.  Dr. Trapani, not wanting to let another day go by with the cat's leg so badly in need of repair, stayed late that Friday night and pinned her leg back together.  She was such a sweet kitty at the hospital it was decided by all that her name should be Sweetie, and so it was.

Sweetie is recovering from her surgery and will be just fine.

Buttons was spayed, and then her spay scar opened up and her intestines fell out.  She had to be put back together, which was quite an extensive ordeal.  She would definitely have died had she not been found immediately and rushed to For The Love of Pets.
Mystery came to the shelter with inflamed skin and hair loss.  She was treated for this and adopted.

Angel is a border collie who was spayed and then developed an infection on her uterine stub.  She had a temperature of 105 and  her heart rate was about 1/2 of what it should be.  After surgery she is feeling much better.

Barrel is an orange tabby cat with a neurological disorder.  He came to the shelter with his littermates and was taken to UC Davis.  The condition cannot be treated.   However, he can have a decent life with this condition.  He walks in a stagger.  Sammie's Friends paid for him to be treated for an upper respiratory condition.  He has recovered.  We are looking for a special home for him and his littermates.

Echo came to the shelter with bad teeth.  She had her teeth cleaned and was quickly adopted.
Bert is a cocker spaniel who needed a hernia repair and had dry eye and bad teeth.  He had a dental exam and his teeth are better.  He will probably need treatment for the dry eye forever.  Bert is a very nice little dog.
Bingo is a nice dog rescued by a woman who could see he had no home.  She spent quite a bit of money getting him fixed up.  As he got better, he attacked her cat who is in the hospital.  She had to take him to a boarding facility until she can find a home for him without cats.  Sammie's Friends has paid part of the boarding fee.
Thomas was an old kitty who came to the shelter and had to have 12 infected teeth pulled.  They were so bad that he had pus pockets at the root of them.  Awful.  He also had a funky ear and needed some treatment for his ear mites.

Douglas is a kitty with cancer who belongs to a blind lady.  He needed diagnostic tests and ongoing medications (leukeran and prednisone).  Douglas and his buddy Claude also received an exam and had their shots updated.

Desperado is a gray tabby male who was found by some people in desperate shape.  He had several major puncture wounds, and his front legs were hurt.  He has since recovered and has been adopted.

Benny was a little dog rescued from Merced.  He needed to be neutered and he needed a dental cleaning and tooth extraction.  He's better now.  Sammie's Friends spent $353 on Benny and adopted him out for $55.  The check bounced.  Sammie's Friends would very much like the money if the owner reads this.

Hansel had a hernia that needed repair.
Bill is about 1-1/2 years old and was picked up by Animal Control as a stray dog.  Poor Bill came to the shelter with all four swollen feet loaded with foxtails to the extent that every foot was oozing from the infection.  He also had flea allergy dermatitis and was itchy and losing hair.  Bill also was positive for heartworm.  Dr. Fossum at Grass Valley Vet has put Bill back together again.  Bill has a lovely temperament and has some manners.  All of his physical maladies are fixable.  Sammie's Friends paid for his medical care and would appreciate donations towards Bill's bill.  His name is fittingly bill (Bill) because of the size of his bill.

Abbie is an old Australian Shepherd with a tumor on her vulva which causes her to be incontinent.  Abbie was treated with antibiotics and she is doing better.  Since Abbie is old and the tumor is not growing rapidly, surgery was not indicated at this time.
