   Animals Helped by Sammie's Friends
in 2006 (Page 1)

During 2006, 196 animals were helped by Sammie's Friends
at a cost of over $61,000.

Tiny was a 4-month-old kitty who came to the shelter with a swollen head from some type of trauma which rendered the kitty totally blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other.  The shelter staff was on the brink of euthanizing her, thinking she was unsalvageable.  Thanks to one AC officer and Sammie's Friends she is now doing much better and living with a wonderful couple where she will have a long and happy life, even though she has very limited vision.
Daisy was a little sweet and abused pup that needed to be spayed, vaccinated, and treated for some skin problems, and off she went to a great new home.  She is indeed one love bug of a pup.

Monty is a big old guy who came to us pretty weather-beaten and very hungry and with some very bad teeth.  He got his teeth cleaned and three very rotten teeth pulled.  He is doing great.  Monty needs a home.  He will be your loyal friend forever if you adopt him.
Domino, an unbelievably handsome chow/mastiff mix, was rescued from another shelter and vaccinated, neutered and sent off to the Happy Hound Hotel in the state of Washington.
Willow is a kitty who had been shot in the eye with some type of pellet gun.  She had a chronic infection and ultimately needed her eye removed.  She was blessed with a great foster mom who cared for her for a long time.  She has now been adopted and is doing very well.

Dixie, a spunky little Doxie, came to the shelter with a deteriorated disc and was kind of dragging her rear end.  First we wanted to help with a little cart for her.  Unfortunately, the person who was going to help with that never showed up.  Our second plan was to take her to a special vet for acupuncture.  This helped Dixie and she was soon chasing kitties as fast as she could go.  We don't support dogs chasing kitties but since she couldn't catch them, it was a pleasure to see her up and moving.  We also paid for treatment of her urinary tract infection.

Nica, Misha, and Tasha are three dogs who needed treatment for heartworm.  Sammie's Friends was able to help, and they are fine now and are on heartworm prevention so they won't be getting that nasty parasite again.

Bella was a 10-year-old tabby kitty much loved by her Mama.  She was taken to the vet, and in spite of the best care, Bella died of kidney failure.  God bless her little soul.  She is at peace.  We were glad we could help a little to make it easier for sweet Bella.

A little Chihuahua came to the shelter and had such bad teeth that he was in misery.  Sammie's Friends paid for a few extractions and a teeth cleaning, and he's a happy boy now.  Also, Sammie paid for the neuter.

Pixie Ann is a cattle dog mix who had a foxtail in her side.  She had had two previous surgeries, and the foxtail could not be found.  Her family had no more money to spend on her, so Sammie's Friends helped out.  Dr. Michael Trapani, the surgical wizard at For The Love of Pets, found the foxtail and lots of pus inside Pixie Ann.  She is doing just great now, and her family is very happy.

Landsbury was treated for an infection in her ears and given some ointment for them, and she was good to go.  Landsbury was adopted by a very nice person in a wheelchair, and Landsbury is learning to be a service dog.  We are proud of them both.

Tux was a kitty run over by a car and left in the bushes to die.  Someone took the kitty to Grass Valley Vet and got her bones mended, and now she is fine and has been adopted.

This little doggie named Sammy will need a condylectomy to fix his jaw.  He was born with a deformity and then was either run over or kicked and his jaw was broken and his skull fractured.  This surgery will cost around $2200.  He needs to have this done soon, as he is a growing pup.  You can see his face is moving sideways.  Part of the face can grow and the other part can't.  He cannot open his mouth, but has figured out a way to eat.  Sammie's Friends has taken on the responsibility for the medical bills of this little guy.

Update: Hi to Sammy's Fan Club!

The update on Sammy is that he had his surgery on Wednesday, March 8 at Loomis Basin.  He had a condylectomy and also had to have a plate put in his jaw to allow it to be realigned.  He has been eating up a storm and running around like a wild child since his surgery.  He has been wearing a pain patch and it is probably the first time in his life he hasn't been in pain, so the boy is feeling pretty good.  The surgeon was able to get his mouth open about 25%.  He had hoped for 20%, so he exceeded what he thought he could do.  He believes that Sammy will be able to have a fine life.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed funds towards Sammy's surgery.  Many thanks for prayers and good thoughts directed his way, as well.

Princess was a stray kitty who wandered into someone's yard with a number of injuries, with the most expensive injury being a fractured leg.  The people who found her were kind enough to keep her, and asked Sammie's Friends to help with some of the bills.  Sammie was happy to do that.  Princess is an older kitty and must have known whose yard to land in.

Twiggy was a poor mama dog with seven pups in the Kern County Animal Shelter, destined for death for sure.  A brilliant volunteer sent out the saddest looking picture we have ever seen.  Cheryl worked diligently to get her and her pups out of that shelter.  Two of the Nevada County Shelter volunteers drove to Bakersfield (700 miles round trip) to pick her up, and our wonderful Dawn of NewDawn Rescue took Twiggy and the pups in and raised them.

Nevada County Animal Shelter provided some food for them and a place for Twiggy to stay while the puppies were being weaned.  AnimalSave paid for the spaying and neutering.  Sammie's Friends has paid for some equipment to help with the training of Twiggy, and will pay her airfare to her new home in Seattle, Washington.  The seven pups have all been adopted.  The whole community rallied to help this little girl, and as a result she will have a good life.  Thanks to so many and especially to Dawn for taking her in.

Skipper is one cute pup.   Sammie's Friends is paying for her to have surgery for her entropian which causes the eyelids and eyelashes to roll inward, causing scarring of the cornea.  Taken to the most extreme, this would cause blindness.

Skipper is very sweet and deserves to be adopted by someone very special.   (Don't they all??)

Spencer was rescued from a high kill shelter.  He is in good health, but had a little kennel cough and needed to be neutered, and had a little irritation on his leg and a possible ear infection.  This is one sweet dog that Sammie was happy to help.  He has been adopted and is now named Cody.

Here is an excerpt from Dixie Redfearn's Column The Reader's Corner in the Union newspaper of March 31st:

Thank you, Cheryl Wicks!  This public thank-you was sent in by Judy and Jerry Wilson. "I would like to thank Cheryl Wicks for her effort and drive to bring us our new family member: Cody.  I called a message number in the paper and within 12 hours, we were contacted by Cheryl.  We were introduced to Cody (AKA Spencer) and fell in love with the little guy.  We've had our Cody for almost four weeks and he has brought so much pleasure to our family.  We would also like to thank the Foster Mother, Carolyn, for all her compassion and love with Cody.  Our Cody is Yellow Lab/Shar-pei with the sweetest disposition and a very inquisitive personality and well behaved.  Thank you for saving Cody.  We would just like the NC community to know Sammie's Friends is a wonderful organization.  Please send donations to Sammie's Friends c/o NC Shelter."

Plum is an old kitty from the shelter living in an ongoing foster home.  She has stomatitus and will take a small dose of clavamox and eat special food until her time is up.  She is a very sweet kitty and Sammie is happy to support her through her golden years.   They are golden because she has what she needs to feel well and she gets the love she needs.

Update:  Precious Plum passed over the Rainbow Bridge in May, 2006.

Hopper is a cute little Shar-pei who had cherry-eye (prolapsed gland of the third eyelid) and also entropian, which causes the eyelids and eyelashes to roll inward, causing scarring of the cornea.  Taken to the most extreme, this would cause blindness.  Hopper also needed some de-worming and treatment for his diarrhea.  He has been adopted and is doing well.

Java was picked up by Animal Control after neighbors had complained about how poorly this dog was being cared for.  Java was gotten from Rottweiller Rescue six years ago and given to a 13-year-old for a grade-school graduation present.  The girl is now 19 and has completely neglected the dog.  Java has heartworm, demodectic mange and secondary skin infections, low thyroid, and was just about starved to death.  Sammie's Friends is paying for Java's treatments for all of these conditions, and Java will be put up for adoption when she is fully recovered.  In the meantime, she is happily living with a foster Mom and getting very good care.

After 10 weeks of recovery at her foster care home, look at Java now!

After having good medical attention for her heartworm and demodectic mange, skin infections and low thyroid, Java has made a spectacular recovery.  Though she still needs more treatment, she has improved so much that she will be available for adoption soon.  Sammie's Friends is so glad that we were able to help this sweet girl.  Many thanks to her foster Mom, Barbara Graves.

Nikko was in a high kill shelter and was going to be euthanized because he had a broken femur (broken in three places).  Sammie's Friends came to the rescue and paid for his surgery with Dr. Trapani at For the Love of Pets.  He is in a foster home and doing just great.  He will be adopted and have a good home forever.  How could you not want to help him?  He is so precious and cute.

An update on Nikko: He was stolen by his foster mom who took him to Everett, Washington.  If seen, we would like to know about it.

Tribble is a little dog who came to the shelter with a very large mammary tumor.  She was not feeling too well.  She has now had the tumor removed and is on the mend.  She is in a foster home and will soon go to a rescue.  She is getting the love and attention and affection she deserves now.

The likelihood of developing a mammary gland tumor increases with each heat a female dog goes through.  This is a very good reason to have your dog spayed.
