   Animals Helped by Sammie's Friends
in 2005 (Page 2)

In 2005, Sammie's Friends paid for medical care for 90 cats, 83 dogs, 1 bunny rabbit, and 4 chickens.

MaMaa, a 10-to-12-year-old cat, came to the shelter matted, dehydrated and with dental problems.  Sammie's Friends helped pay for her treatment to get her into an adoptable condition.  A blood panel was done, and she also had high liver enzymes.  After getting her matted hair trimmed, receiving i.v. fluids, and receiving necessary dental care, she began to eat and feel better.  Also a fecal sample was taken to be sure that she was free of parasites.  MaMaa is doing well.

In the past, before Sammie's Friends was there to pay for veterinary care, cats like MaMaa were euthanized.  We think MaMaa deserved to live and have a good life.  Sammie's Friends is there to help kitties just like MaMaa.

Taffy was having a hard time breathing and was vomiting up hair balls.  She was taken to the veterinarian and examined and found to be healthy.

She was given a shot for some stiffness in her joints.  Later, she was treated for URI and a humidifier was used to break up her congestion.

Teddi has been recovering at the home of the man who saved her.  Teddi is now a happy girl as you can see.  Her hot spots are nearly all gone and her foxtail wound is improving.  She is no longer scared and has a nice playmate doggie to keep her company.  We expected that she would need additional medical attention to complete the foxtail removal process, but she was getting more and more healthy as the days go by.

Sprig is a lovely Chesapeake Bay Retriever who was suffering from heartworm and an allergy to the worms.  He is a member of a family that loves him dearly.  They had been quoted a high fee for his treatment.  Sammie's Friends worked with a local veterinarian who came up with a treatment plan for a lesser price.  Sammie's Friends was able to help the family pay for the treatment, and now Sprig is with his family and living a good life.

Freeway needed our help.  He was a 6-year-old purebred Heinz 57.   Cute as a button.  He was found on a freeway ramp cold, wet and bloody.  The lady who found him took him to the vet and had him sewed back together.  She could not keep him because he chased her cats.  We took him in at the Nevada County Animal Shelter.  Sammie's Friends paid his medical bills, which were around $500.  Freeway had a ruptured ear drum and an ongoing ear infection that slowly healed.  His little head hurt so bad and he was so grumpy at first and he wouldn't eat because just chewing made his poor ear hurt.  Now Freeway is full of personality and very loving and eating like a little piggy.

Whisper is a very big Shepherd/Malamute mix who came to the shelter as a stray.  He is a beautiful dog and now lives in Nevada.  He has his first plane ride to get there.  He had a problem with his urinary tract, and Sammie's Friends paid to have the infection treated.

Blackie is a 9-year-old lab mix who had a hurt paw and needed dental extractions.  The owner was on a fixed income so Sammie's Friends and AnimalSave helped pay for this procedure for Blackie.

Jack was a dog brought to the shelter because he had been dumped on somebody's property and the landlord said the family couldn't keep him.  Poor Jack, barely more than a big puppy, came to the shelter terrified.  The volunteers worked with him to calm him down and make him adoptable.  Eventually the family that had to turn him in were able to return and adopt him.  After a conference with the landlord and the neighbors, it was decided that Jack was a nice dog and would be fine to have as a resident of the neighborhood.  Jack was neutered by the shelter, which is part of the adoption fee.  Sammie's Friends paid to have Jack get his rabies, DHLLP and bordetella shots and Heartguard so that his happy family could afford to adopt him.  Jack lives with an 8-  and 9-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl.  Jack was one happy boy when they picked him up at the shelter.

During 2004, over 100 animals were helped by Sammie's Friends.
